The same thing took place during Mubarak's Wives want sex tonight Argentine reign, as well as beforehand. Details are under the section titled "Pattern of Impunity for Sectarian Violence". The thing to be wary of would be any mainstream reportage which makes this sound like a recent occurence, or something which Mubarak had somehow held in check, or god forbid, something which can only be prevented with the installation of another dictator. Because then the question becomes: if organizations like HRW and Amnesty International had been reporting it, but mainstream news outlets are only reporting it now, why the disparity in coverage, and why this particular timing? What kinds of views are we being primed for, and who benefits? If I had to guess at Egypt's next ruler, he's going to be more of the same. We supplied Egypt with all the weapons they could afford while robbing their citizens, we considered Mubarak an ally while taking advantage of torture being legal there, and military strong men are exactly the sort of men who give us the business deals and local geopolitical enforcement we want while keeping their population oppressed. They just be doing it in a more secular manner than, say, the Brotherhood. If sectarian violence against Coptic Christians becomes a big mainstream press story, I would be searching for precursors to US invasion. It isn't to say that the violence should be trivialized, just that before Mubarak was overthrown, we simply didn't give a shit. Despite the global recession, I can't help but feel this one small comfort about it: we can't afford to invade anyone right now. :-p I.
